Self Catering Holiday Cottage in Stranraer - about Stranraer and area
There are 4, 18 hole golf courses within the Machars & Rhins region of Dumfries & Galloway. Creachmore in Stranraer itself, designed by James Braid, is of championship standard. Lagganmore near Portpatrick, Dunskey in Portpatrick itself, and The County at Glenluce are also excellent courses and are only a short car journey from Stranraer. Turnberry, host to The Open, is also within an hour's drive.
The exotic Logan Gardens near Port Logan, being on the Gulf Stream, have many rare plants of great interest, and in the same area, there are also beautiful gardens at Logan House, and Ardwell.
Moving a few miles in the other direction, Dunskey House, near Portpatrick, and Lochinch Castle, only 4 miles from Stranraer, also feature. Not to be missed, of course, is Glenwhan Garden with its spectacular Spring display of azaleas and rhodedendrons. All have café/restaurant facilities, of an extremely high standard.
The village of Port Logan is well worth a visit, and a "must" is the lighthouse at "Scotland`s Land`s End" - the Mull of Galloway - which also has an excellent coffee house and visitor centre, with breathtaking sea views. A special day out for all visitors to Stranraer.
Fishing, both sea and loch is a popular pastime, and permits are available locally.
The area is home to many excellent restaurants, and cafes with home baking regularly a speciality.
Back to Stranraer, Agnew Park is an interesting place to spend time either with the family, or just watching the world go by, offering several outdoor attractions - the miniature train being very popular,- putting, well equipped playground, karting track, and boating pond. Tennis courts are situated at Stair Park, next to the local football ground.
The Ryan Centre also in Stranraer is a wonderful option for the odd rainy day, with an indoor pool, and gymnasium. Films and shows are presented from time to time in the theatre and usually require forward booking.
Daily sailings to Northern Ireland are available a few miles along the coast, at Cairnryan - another funpacked day away!
The Lodge is also an ideal base for cyclists and walkers.
